Chapter Thirteen

Melanie

The first thing I did when I woke up was look at the clock. According to the red digital numbers, it was nine forty-five in the morning. I hoped to have just awoken from a horrible nightmare, but knew better. My dreams and reality were the same. Someone was blackmailing me and now my parents were going to learn about my past mistakes. Even worse, the tabloids were going to have a field day at my expense.

I felt around the bed for the envelope, but couldn’t find it. Not wanting to face reality, I tried to force myself to fall back to sleep, without avail. I didn’t notice Ryan sitting in the chair next to the bed. He startled me when he leaned over and stroked my hair.

“Hey, how are you feeling?”

I shrugged in response.

“Are you hungry?”

I shook my head. “Did you see the pictures?”

The guilty expression on his face answered my question before he uttered the word, “Yes.”

“Was it John Barkley who hurt you yesterday?” he asked.

A rush of emotion overcame me as I recalled the man who held the knife to my throat. “It was the blond man we saw in the restaurant the night we had dinner with my family. The same man who hung around the theatre. How did he find us here?” I sat up in bed, surprised to be wearing the dress from yesterday.

“I don’t know.” He shook his head. “The pictures in the envelope, are they from the photo shoot you told me about?”

“Yes.”

“Do you remember posing for those pictures?”

“No. He must have hidden a camera in the bedroom and photographed us changing from one outfit to the next.”

I referred to the two pictures of Amanda, Julie and me changing in Jack’s room. We were all half-dressed, Julie was laughing at something and Amanda was speaking. “The rest of the pictures must have been taken after we passed out.”

“He did a good job making it appear that you were all partying together.”

“He signed an affidavit swearing that all of the pictures were turned over to the lawyer.”

“He failed to include pictures he wasn’t photographed in.” His tone lacked its normal warmth. “Any chance the two girls in the pictures are behind this?”

“I doubt it. We were all pretty shaken up at the time.” I scratched the back of my head with my nails until I could no longer take the burning sensation in my head. It was my way of self-punishing. “Julie’s brother wanted to kill the men involved.”

“When was the last time anyone contacted you about these pictures?”

“Yesterday was the first time.” I picked the cuticle on my thumb. “I’d be lying if I told you I had forgotten about them. I’ll never forget the experience. Until I met John Barkley the other night, I hadn’t given them much thought.”

“Did the blond man ever approach you before yesterday?”

“No. I was afraid he was a stalker. I never imagined he was involved with those pictures.”

Ryan lowered his head and pressed his fingers against his eyes.
