Chapter Thirteen
Melanie
The first thing I did when I woke up was look at the clock. According to the red digital numbers, it was nine forty-five in the morning. I hoped to have just awoken from a horrible nightmare, but knew better. My dreams and reality were the same. Someone was blackmailing me and now my parents were going to learn about my past mistakes. Even worse, the tabloids were going to have a field day at my expense.
I felt around the bed for the envelope, but couldnât find it. Not wanting to face reality, I tried to force myself to fall back to sleep, without avail. I didnât notice Ryan sitting in the chair next to the bed. He startled me when he leaned over and stroked my hair.
âHey, how are you feeling?â
I shrugged in response.
âAre you hungry?â
I shook my head. âDid you see the pictures?â
The guilty expression on his face answered my question before he uttered the word, âYes.â
âWas it John Barkley who hurt you yesterday?â he asked.
A rush of emotion overcame me as I recalled the man who held the knife to my throat. âIt was the blond man we saw in the restaurant the night we had dinner with my family. The same man who hung around the theatre. How did he find us here?â I sat up in bed, surprised to be wearing the dress from yesterday.
âI donât know.â He shook his head. âThe pictures in the envelope, are they from the photo shoot you told me about?â
âYes.â
âDo you remember posing for those pictures?â
âNo. He must have hidden a camera in the bedroom and photographed us changing from one outfit to the next.â
I referred to the two pictures of Amanda, Julie and me changing in Jackâs room. We were all half-dressed, Julie was laughing at something and Amanda was speaking. âThe rest of the pictures must have been taken after we passed out.â
âHe did a good job making it appear that you were all partying together.â
âHe signed an affidavit swearing that all of the pictures were turned over to the lawyer.â
âHe failed to include pictures he wasnât photographed in.â His tone lacked its normal warmth. âAny chance the two girls in the pictures are behind this?â
âI doubt it. We were all pretty shaken up at the time.â I scratched the back of my head with my nails until I could no longer take the burning sensation in my head. It was my way of self-punishing. âJulieâs brother wanted to kill the men involved.â
âWhen was the last time anyone contacted you about these pictures?â
âYesterday was the first time.â I picked the cuticle on my thumb. âIâd be lying if I told you I had forgotten about them. Iâll never forget the experience. Until I met John Barkley the other night, I hadnât given them much thought.â
âDid the blond man ever approach you before yesterday?â
âNo. I was afraid he was a stalker. I never imagined he was involved with those pictures.â
Ryan lowered his head and pressed his fingers against his eyes.
